Resorts World Catskills announced last week that the casino and hotel would officially open to the public on the 8th of February 2018. This is the first time the new casino has had an opening date, and the best news is that it is around three weeks ahead of schedule. Resorts World Catskills will be the largest casino resort in upstate New York when it opens, having cost $1 billion to construct.
The new Resorts World Catskills Casino resort is set to open in early February 2018. This puts the opening three weeks ahead of the original schedule.
Resorts World Catskills Most Ambitious New York Casino
Resorts World Catskills has been built in the heart of the Catskills, the town of Thompson. The officials of Sullivan County are confident that the new casino resort will increase tourism in the region and bring visitors back to the Catskills. The area was once a very popular holiday destination for those in New York City, as well as surrounding areas.
Back in 2013, when New York state approved its gambling expansion plans, four casinos were approved. Resorts World Catskills is the last of those four casinos to open, but it is also by far the most ambitious. It is also believed it has the best potential location. There will be over 2100 slot machines, as well as 150 table games with an 18-story hotel and a golf course. In 2019, the resort also plans to add an indoor water park.
Concerns Over Market Saturation
It’s not all good news though, as there are some that are concerned the casino market is getting oversaturated. Of the other three upstate New York casinos that opened previously, all of them have been underperforming. Current tribal casinos, commercial casinos, and slot parlors are all sharing the concern that the market is oversaturated. In the next few months, another small casino will be opening, which could make things even more difficult.
However, there are also those who are hopeful that Resorts World Catskills will be the one to turn things around and meet, or exceed, revenue predictions. The casino is just 90 miles from Manhattan and has been built where the old Concord Hotel used to be located. This was the largest resort in the area and was quite popular. Unfortunately, it was closed in 1998.
