Massachusetts Casinos Keep Gamblers from Visiting to Competitors

It seems that Massachusetts casinos are doing all they can to keep US gamblers from heading to casinos in competitor states, such Rhode Island and Connecticut. A recent study by the University of Massachusetts, in partnerships with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), has shown that players have been pretty loyal to Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville.

A slots-only gaming addition to the race track opened in 2015. Since then, it seems that it has been able to keep gambling money in-state. Data reveals a decline in neighboring states tax revenues on gambling. For example, Connecticut’s revenues from the two tribal casinos located on the state dropped from US$433.6 million in 2006 to US$263.6 million in 2018.

Another key point in the study was that number of gamblers making the trek to out-of-state casinos dropped by an estimated 10% from 2013 to 2016 due to gambling venues being available nearer to them.

New Massachusetts Casinos Hoping to Experience Similar Levels of Loyalty

It is important to note that the data used in this study was garnered between 2015 and 2016. This was before the opening of the MGM Springfield and the Encore Boston Harbor, which both began trading over the last year.

At this present moment, it is unclear as to whether these two venues will have the same effect the Plainridge Park Casino had on numbers. But with the two new casinos being more dedicated gambling venues, it’s safe to assume that these venues have a good chance of doing so.

If anything, these numbers may spell good things for Massachusetts’ tax revenues. Even more so if some of the money seen in the decline in Connecticut is going to MA state coffers. The state seems to have hope in establishing casinos as another $300 million project has been set into motion despite worries that the Massachusetts casinos market is already saturated. It will be interesting to see the results of doing such.
