How do Slots Tournaments Work?

A player signs up for a tournament and gets a certain number of credits to play with at a slot machine. They then have to play against the clock, the machine, and ultimately against other players to see how much they can make. Hopefully, a player hits enough big and small jackpots to push their total credit score up.

At the end of the tournament, the casino distributes the prize among the top-performing players on the leaderboard. The higher a player is (i.e., the more points), the more money they win. However, other tournament formats distribute it among all the players.

Types of Tournaments

There are various types of slots tournaments out there. Unlike tournaments of old, entry is free, but players must use money when playing. Let’s take a look at the six different types of slots tournaments.

1. Extender

In an extender slot tournament, players can buy add-ons to boost their base score. Since the point of a slot tournament is to play for as long as possible, add-ons are a great advantage. Usually, casinos sell them in groups, which means they make tournament play expensive. However, if the prize pool is worth it, players should consider investing.

2. Freerolls

These are slot tournaments that cost nothing to play. At their chosen casino site, a player enters and plays for a period set by the casino. Typically, a game is five to seven minutes long, and competitions last for about an hour.

Players try to rack up as many points as possible to be at the top of the leaderboard. Once the tourney ends, the host casino site distributes the cash prize among the top players.

3. Reloader

In a reloader slots tournament, players have the option of rebuys to continue playing. To begin, players buy entry into the standard five-minute game in a one-hour tournament. Then, when their five minutes are up, they can rebuy into the competition.

Rebuys are generally sold in groups of 10, which equals 50 minutes. In a game where longer play is an advantage, players will have to consider rebuys if they want to advance.

4. Scheduled

These tournaments are advertised on the site in advance. They have a start and end time. Casinos will offer two types of scheduled slots tournaments: one in which the prize money for the top scorers is already decided.

The other is where all buy-in fees are redistributed among players as the prize money. Therefore, the more players, the larger the prize money.

5. Sit and Go

A sit-and-go has a set number of players and is played over a set period of time. Once the maximum number of entries is reached, the tournament starts. It usually lasts up to one hour.

6. Survivor

Like the once popular TV show, this is a knock-out type of slots tournament. It’s usually set up as three rounds, each five minutes long. The rounds have the same rules and gameplay, but the bottom 50% of losing players are knocked out at the end of round one.

After round two, the top 10% move to the final third round, where they win the prize money. Survivor slots tournaments are very high-energy and exciting, as there are only 10-second intervals between rounds.
