Norfolk Casino May Have to Jump Another Hurdle

The prospect of the Norfolk casino may be blocked yet again after its developers received the go-ahead. The civic group, “Say No to the Norfolk Casino”, struggled to get all the signatures needed to force a public vote over the Norfolk casino. The Norfolk City Council had agreed to have the development of the Tribal gaming resort continue.

The Council has also agreed to sell Harbor Park land owned by the state to the Pamunkey Indian Tribe for approximately $10 million. However, opposition groups are not happy with the development of a $700 million tribal gaming resort.

Earlier this week a petition was filed by five Norfolk residents who call themselves the Citizens. The petition seeks to form an Informed Norfolk Committee that would pass a decree that would effectively render the City Council’s decision null and void. This petition has been given to the Norfolk Circuit Court.

It is up to the Committee to collect 1,250 signatures and give them to the city clerk in order to form a proper ordinance proposal. Once the signatures have been submitted the City Council will then have to vote on the proposed motion.

The Norfolk Casino Opponents May Get a Second Chance

Former City Council member, Nicole Carry, told the media that the Citizens is using its rights available in a democratic process. If the Council votes in favour of the group, it will be allowed to force another referendum provided they convince 4000 people to sign their petition.

Those who are against the development of the Norfolk casino are concerned that the gambling house will not bring any kind of benefit to the residents of southeast Virginia Waterfront city.

Overview

The Norfolk casino is expected to have 500 hotel rooms with approximately 4000 slot machines as well as 225 table games. However, there are a lot of groups in Norfolk that are not keen on the casino development.
