Maine Town Receives A Greater Cut from Oxford Casino Gaming

The town of Oxford got an uptick last year in 2018. The Maine town revenue received over $180k from the Oxford Casino Hotel compared to the past year 2017.

According to Herald sun “In 2018, Maine town which hosts about 4,100 in Oxford County did receive $180,156 more compared to the prior year.”

The town received approximately $191 million from its 28 table gambling games and 968 slot games in 2018. In the previous year, Oxford Casino received $1.72 million, with its table games contributing about $351,282, and $1.37 million from slot machines. This is according to the Maine Town Gambling Control Board.

The casino was approved in 2010 by voters in a state-wide referendum, which did establish the formula for which the town and county will receive revenue. Courtesy of the referendum, the government of Maine, through its Gambling Control Board, will receive 16 percent of net table games revenue and 46 percent of net slot machines revenue. In addition, the town will also receive a two percent share and it can spend the money on anything they want.

Butch Asselin, the Oxford Town Manager said- “The cash goes into an over-all revenue account and is used on offset expenses like the town’s monthly reimbursement to RSU 17, payroll, fuel costs and health insurance, and to name a few.

“Proceeds that are received from the casino are preserved likewise to other revenues that the town gets like excise tax, real estate taxes, plumbing permits, and boat registrations,” added Asselin.

How they Use the Revenue

The town officials have used the money from the casino to pay for the town’s fire and police services. Al;so transfer station, Town Office expenses and also to reduce the property taxes. The town naturally uses most of the money to decrease taxes.

A prearranged percentage of slots and table game operations are returned by the board members to numerous entities. This includes the Department of Education for public schools. Which gets 10 percent, the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribal governments. Receiving four percent, and Maine Public College scholarships also receive three percent, then one percent is for agricultural fairs.
