- 1854– One year after the official opening of Freehold Raceway, the annual harness racing fair in conjunction with Monmouth Agricultural Society was established
- 1894– New Jersey government bans pari-mutuel gambling
- 1897– New Jersey voters approve the amendment of the state constitution, effectively banning all forms of gambling in the State.
From 1897 to 1939, there was officially no gambling allowed. However, some bookies operated on the edge of the law, conducting bets and wagers. Along with gambling games that were played in individual bars in the State, all of which were made easy by the fact that the gambling ban was not enforced.

History Of Gambling In New Jersey

It wasn’t until the mid-1970s that casino gambling was considered once again. The State initially voted against it in 1974, before the law was passed to allow it once again in 1976, but only in Atlantic City. Two years later, the first casino opened – it was called Resorts Atlantic City.
