Best Rhode Island Casinos & Gambling Guide

1930’s

The state first introduced pari-mutuel betting on horse racing in the same year, and Narragansett Park was launched in the same year. While horse racing saw an increase in popularity, Rhode Island could not compete with Connecticut in terms of revenue from bets. Today, there is only one greyhound race track in Rhode Island.

1970’s

The state lottery was officially permitted in the early ’70s, with the first official draw taking place a week after it was signed into law. Rhode Island gambling made its ultimate landmark when the state became the first state to televise the lotto weekly draw, beginning in 1975.

Lotto draws, keno, and electronic lottery games were first introduced in 1992 and are all now run under the guidance and authority of the Lottery Commission. Charitable gambling was legalized in the early ’90s, and this initially included poker, casino nights, bingo, and raffles. In 1993, the charitable gambling laws were changed, making raffles, bingo, and bazaars legal charitable gambling games.

2000s

The introduction of VLTs at Lincoln Park turned the race track into a racino, a race track combined with a casino. The two casinos in RI, Lincoln Park and Twin River Casino, now offer table games to bettors.
