Tropicana Casino in Las Vegas is set to officially close in 2024. The official announcement of its closure doesn’t come as a big surprise, as there have consistently been rumours of plans to develop the land the casino sits on. The land has been earmarked for the construction of a new baseball stadium, set to be the new home of the Oakland A’s Major League Baseball team.
Tropicana Set to Close April 2024
The official announcement for the closure of Tropicana Las Vegas was announced on Monday, the 29th of January, 2024. The casino resort will close its doors on the 2nd of April 2024, so the final night guests can stay is the 1st of April. Currently, if you want to stay at Tropicana before it closes, a room will start at $299 per night, plus taxes and fees.
The Oakland A’s are expected to make an announcement and confirm their relocation plans in the near future. The Tropicana opened its doors on the 3rd of April, 1957. If it stayed open one more day, it would have been able to celebrate its 67th birthday. While not the oldest casino still operating in Las Vegas, that title is still held by the Flamingo that opened in 1947, Tropicana had a good run.
Future Plans Still Unclear
The plans for Tropicana’s land are still somewhat unclear. The last time the Oakland A’s discussed the plan, it was to build a baseball stadium with a retractable roof. The stadium would occupy nine of the 35 acres of land. There was also talk of Bally’s, the current owners of Tropicana, building a new casino resort on the remaining land. The Oakland A’s also received written permission from the Major League Baseball in November 2023 to relocate to Las Vegas.
However, since then, there has been no further information about the future. There also seem to be some doubts about the funding of both the baseball stadium as well as Bally’s ability to fund the building of a new casino resort.
Hopefully, all these plans come to completion, and we won’t see another Las Vegas casino demolished and replaced with a car park.
