NCAA basketball betting odds
There are three different odds systems types: American, fractional, and decimal. American odds are also known as money line odds and are the most preferred odds system. A betting line in the sportsbook would look as such:
New Hampshire – 150
Vermont +120
In a game between Vermont and New Hampshire, Vermont is suggested to be the favorite, and New Hampshire is the underdog. The minus sign indicates the favorite, and the positive sign indicates the underdog.
Popular College Basketball Betting Lines
Moneyline
The moneyline bet is popular as the bettors need not guess by how many points a team will win by, but bet on whether or not a team will win. Using the New Hampshire and Vermont game we mentioned above. Should you choose to bet on Vermont, you will have to make a US$120 wager to win US$100. Betting on the underdog will see bettors make US$150 when making a US$100 wager on New Hampshire.
Spread Betting
If you are looking for an exciting way to bet on a game of basketball, the point spread is perfect. Similar to the Moneyline, one team is declared a favorite, and the other is declared an underdog. Should a team have a negative point spread value (-10.5), it means 10.5 points favor the team. If the team has a positive point spread, it means the team is the underdog by + 10.5 points.
If you choose to go with the favorite, the team has to win by 10.5 or more for you to win the placed bet. If you place a bet on the underdog, the team will have to lose by 10.5 or less for you to win the bet.
Over/Under
Over/under bets are also known as totals. The total is the combined score between the two teams that are playing. The oddsmakers will set an over-under number, and bettors will have to bet on whether or not the final score will be over or under the oddsmakers’ set over-under number.
Say you are watching a Cincinnati and Memphis game. If the oddsmaker sets the total at 149.5 and the final score is 70-40, the combined total would be 110, which is under the oddsmaker’s set total. Therefore, if you bet on the over, you will lose your bet. Bettors who went with the under will win their bet.
Futures
Future lines are available on almost all the teams during the season. Bettors can place bets on who will win the March Madness trophy or the upcoming national championship. Bettors can place their bets on the outcome of an event that is happening a while away. The top-ranked teams will have their odds at +800, and the lower-ranking teams will have +40000 odds.
