Pennsylvania Passes Gambling Expansion Plans

Home » Pennsylvania Passes Gambling Expansion Plans

Pennsylvania has finally passed its proposed gambling expansion plans, which were thought up to help cover the budget deficit. The gambling expansions first came to light several months ago, but they have only just been given the green light. This is great news for anyone living in the state who loves casino games. The gambling expansion plan changes numerous gambling laws and should hopefully boost the tax revenue generated by casinos.

Gambling Expansion brings Numerous Changes

The decision to pass the gambling expansion plans came earlier this week. After the upper Chamber, controlled by the Republicans, met behind closed doors. When it finished, it emerged with news of approving the plan, in an effort to help fund the state’s $32 billion budget.

The gambling expansion plan will allow for slot machines to be placed at truck stops, as well as airport terminals. It will also allow for the construction of up to ten satellite casinos, as well as legalizing online casinos, internet lottery sales, and daily fantasy sports. The final part of the expansion plan will allow for sports betting regulations, provided New Jersey’s appeal is successful.

Gambling Expansion Breakdown

The Pennsylvania gambling expansion plan brings plenty of changes with it, so here is a breakdown of exactly what will change.

  • Slot Expansion – Slot machines will now be permitted in the state’s eight airports, as well as certain truck stops. To qualify, a gas station needs to sell diesel for commercial vehicles and sell 50 000+ gallons of diesel every month. If they qualify, they will be permitted to house five gaming terminals.
  • Satellite Casinos – Each of the states ten dedicated casinos will be allowed to open a satellite casino, provided it is at least 25 miles away from the mail location. These satellite casinos will be allowed to hold 750 slot machines and 30 gambling tables.
  • Online casinos – Any licensed casino in Pennsylvania will be able to offer online casino games, if they choose to, after obtaining a $10 million online casino permit. Daily Fantasy Sports will officially be legalized, and the lottery ca sell tickets online.
  • Sports Betting – The final part puts basic plans in place to legalize sports betting. This will only be put into action if New Jersey is victorious in its upcoming Supreme Court appeal.

At this stage, it is not known if the Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Wolf, supports the move, but there have been many critics. Many believe it isn’t feasible to fund the budget deficit with gambling. Now that the expansion plans have been passed, we’ll have to wait and find out if they’ll be successful.
